If you live in Collin County, especially in the eastern half, you may have had the pleasure of trying to plant a tree or dig in your yard and found that your shovel "rings" every time you try to dig a hole.
The rock is everywhere, but it seems to be more shallow on the eastern side of Allen TX. and neighboring cities.
In some areas there is barely enough soil to grow grass!
We like to say... "Rock is your friend" when it comes to the foundation on your home and setting posts for your new Hancock Fence. This underground rock provides maximum stability when addressed properly.
We have tried all kinds of equipment, drill bits and techniques over the years to make drilling into this rock easier and less time consuming.
Mother nature and her rock wins every time.
What's needed to get the upper hand is large commercial equipment with hydraulic drilling apparatus and thousands of pounds of down-force.
Unfortunately... this equipment would destroy your yard!
We are forced to use our two man augers with expensive carbide drilling tips to reduce wear & tear on your lawn. Our installers also need to be able to access the tight areas between houses. Large commercial equipment simply is not user friendly in a residential situation.
Typically... in regular soil, it takes about 60 seconds to drill a 36 inch deep hole to set a post. As you will see in the video below, rock holes are a different beast. We can spend up to 15 minutes or more per hole depending on the hardness of the rock. Rock can delay post setting by a full day depending on the size of the job.
Fractured rock, rock chunks and loose rock is our worst enemy. The rock tips cant "set" and cut smoothly as they bounce around. This is extremely hard on the transmissions in the drilling equipment and our installers.
Solid, stable rock allows the drill tip to establish a center point and begin scraping away... grinding the rock into a fine powder. Depending on the hardness and situation, water is sometimes used as a lubricant and a coolant to keep the bits from overheating and prematurely ruining the cutting edge.
As you can see... drilling can be very very time consuming!
Our installer stands on the drill head to produce more down force on the bit. Too much force will cause the bit to stall.
FINALLY we hit the bottom! ROCK PUDDING ANYONE??
Eventually we get all the holes drilled and we are ready to start setting posts!
We do not suggest going to all this trouble and setting WOOD posts.
We use ONLY steel posts on ALL Hancock Fences,
rock or not...
Many fence contractors are not equipped or interested in rock drilling. They will simply stop when they hit it and move to the next hole. Shallow set posts only lead to leaning fences. Hancock Fence embraces rock because it establishes the ultimate foundation for your new fence. YES.... as you might imagine, extra charges are involved. Rock drilling can add hundreds of extra dollars to a job. Take comfort in knowing that your posts are as solid as they can be and a leaning fence is not in your future.
There is nothing better than a steel post, set in solid rock, 36 inches deep, filled with concrete.
That's as good as it gets!!
